Goals

It is the desire of the Jakarta EE specification projects to be able to make backwards incompatible changes to new
versions of Jakarta EE specifications. The goal of this document is to enable that outcome while also providing
guidance so that users can be aware of when backwards incompatible changes have occurred. The high-level framework in
which this document is written:

Specification Projects under the Eclipse Foundation Specification
Process MUST produce a Technology Compatibility Kit (TCK) that delivers
on the promise of enabling multiple compatible implementations.

This document defines:

Materials a TCK MUST possess to be considered suitable for
delivering portability
Ratifying a Final TCK
Process for challenging tests and how these challenges are resolved
Means of excluding released TCK tests from certification
requirements
Policy on improving TCK tests for released specifications

Jakarta EE is a set of open specifications used for enterprise Java application development. It is a continuation of Java EE technology that gathers the wide community of Java developers interested in advancing the specifications for future cloud native Java enterprise applications. Each specification release includes its respective Technology Compatibility Kit (TCK). You can find a link to the TCK on the appropriate specification release page, for example see Jakarta EE Platform 9.0 or in the case of individual specification see Jakarta Authentication 2.0.

Introduction

This article is a self-contained, step-by-step, practical guide to help developers navigate the Jakarta EE Specification Process (JESP).

It is meant as a helpful tool, so if in doubt, always refer to the JESP for completeness. Contact the Specification Committee if you have any questions or comments about anything related to the development of Jakarta EE Specifications. The JESP is an adaptation of the Eclipse Foundation Specification Process (EFSP), which is itself an adaptation of the Eclipse Foundation Development Process (EDP).

This document describes the practices of the Jakarta EE Specification
Committee.

Changes to this document must be approved by a simple majority vote of
the Jakarta EE specification committee, conducted via the public Jakarta
EE Specification Committee (jakarta.ee-spec@eclipse.org) mailing list.

This is a public document.

Specification Committee

The Jakarta EE Specification Committee is responsible for implementing
the Eclipse Foundation Specification Process (EFSP) for all
Specification Projects (as that term is defined by the EFSP) under the
purview of the Jakarta EE Working Group. This includes the adaptation of
the EFSP for Jakarta which is referred to as the Jakarta EE
Specification Process (JESP).
